Urbanity/sociolinguistic urbanity in the Maghreb world: the case of the Casbah from Algiers

Abstract

This article deals with the notion of citadinity /urbanity, taking as an example the case of the Kasbah of Algiers. It is a multidisciplinary approach whose purpose is to describe what is meant by the urban character of the city and its occupants. Citizenship can be a spatial, social, cultural but also linguistic characteristic. Still further, this text asks what differentiates the city dweller from the urban and the rural, a distinction very important to describe because it could explain one of the sources of social tensions.
