This paper is a study of Tahar Djaout’s novel, Les Vigiles , which deals with the unfolding in the narrative of forms such as the short story, the chronicle, the thriller, and the aesthetic use of the fragmentary. It is punctuated by a contextualisation and an interpretation whose purpose is to establish the link between the topics, the writing choices, and the reflexive motives which supply
the text. As an outstanding historical and literary point, Les Vigiles is part of the global dynamics which has characterized the Algerian literary landsacape since 1989.
